|
Gene Type | protein-coding |
Organism | Danio rerio(zebrafish) |
Summary | This gene is a member of the SEP15 family. It has been detected only in fish, and thought to have arisen by gene duplication. Like Sep15, this protein is localized in the endoplasmic reticulum. Its exact function is not known; however, because of its restricted occurrence, it may have a specialized function in fish. The encoded protein is a selenoprotein, containing the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec). Sec is encoded by the UGA codon, which normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved stem-loop structure, designated the Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon, rather than as a stop signal.
