Data suggest that S. pombe 972 expressing a nonphosphorylatable Atf1 variant is more sensitive to oxidative stress because of impaired transcription of subset of stress genes whose expression is controlled by Pap1; in S. pombe 972 expressing phospho-mimicking Atf1 mutant, presence of Sty1 is completely dispensable.
