Summary | This gene has 5-exon structure similar to chicken selenoprotein P gene (GeneID:431587). These two genes are thought to have arisen by whole genome duplication. This gene encodes a vertebrate-specific selenoprotein that contains a single selenocysteine (Sec) residue compared to 13 Sec residues in chicken selenoprotein P. The exact function of this selenoprotein is not known; however, it is predicted to have a signal peptide, so it is probably secreted like selenoprotein P, and may function as an extracellular antioxidant. Sec is encoded by the UGA codon, which normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved stem-loop structure, designated the Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon, rather than as a stop signal. The mRNA for this selenoprotein contains a single SECIS element. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2017]. |
