    Comment Comment: REVIEWED REFSEQ: This record has been curated by NCBI staff. The reference sequence was derived from BC112331.1, AL135998.6, BP303816.1, AK298249.1 and BQ029315.1. This sequence is a reference standard in the RefSeqGene project. On Feb 19, 2009 this sequence version replaced NM_005015.2. CCDS Note: This CCDS ID represents the most N-terminally extended OXA1L protein, which is derived from the 5'-most translation start codon of the transcript (nt 1 of NM_005015.3). This AUG codon has a weak Kozak signal, compared to a strong Kozak signal for a downstream in-frame AUG (nt 40 of NM_005015.3). Translation from this second AUG would result in a protein that is 13 aa shorter at the N-terminus. Due to leaky scanning by ribosomes, it is possible that some ribosomes may initiate translation at the first AUG codon, while others may initiate at the second AUG. A third in-frame AUG codon is also present further downstream (nt 181 of NM_005015.3), translation from which would result in a protein that is 60 aa shorter at the N-terminus. Experimental evidence in PMID:12972568 suggests that the 60 aa shorter protein can function better than the longest protein to complement the respiratory growth defect of yeast oxa1 cells. However, the longest protein still retained some function. There is no experimental evidence examining the function of either protein in human cells, or no indication of which start codon is preferentially used in human cells.
