The protease Kex1p appears to mediate HOClinduced lethality, since its absence enhances cell viability and decreases levels of ROS as well as formation of HOCl-modified epitopes upon challenge with lethal doses of HOCl.

Kex1 contributes also to the active cell death program induced by acetic acid stress or during chronological aging, suggesting that Kex1 plays a more general role in cellular suicide of yeast.
